Nevada is probably one of the most overlooked states in the country. Out-of-staters know us because of Las Vegas, but know nothing about the rest of the state. Well, that’s just fine by us. We know Nevada is one of the best places to live in the nation and we’re fine with keeping that a secret! Here in Nevada, we are used to a way of living that nobody else in the country can claim. Here are 10 Nevada privileges that we absolutely love and are unique to us.

  1. Seeing a ghost town whenever (and wherever) we want.

Marc Cooper/Flickr Did you know that Nevada is home to more than 600 ghost towns? That’s way more than the amount of inhabited cities in our state. This means our state is a paradise for ghost town enthusiasts and those who love exploring abandoned places. They are scattered all over the state, so no matter where you live there is always a ghost town waiting to be visited.

  1. Endless hot springs.

Travel Nevada/Flickr On top of boasting a massive amount of ghost towns, we are also home to more than 300 hot springs. That’s more than anywhere else in the country. Canyon hot springs, desert hot springs, mountain hot springs…you name it and we’ve got it. A once-in-a-lifetime soak is just a quick drive away.

  1. Sunshine all day, every day. Well, mostly…

RStonejr/Flickr Who doesn’t love sunshine? Luckily for us, sunny days are a common occurrence. In fact, Las Vegas sees an average of 294 sunny days a year. That’s a lot of sunshine!

  1. The darkest skies you’ll ever see.

Beau Rogers/Flickr In contrast, Nevada is also home to some of the darkest skies in the country (Las Vegas and Reno excluded). Stargazing is pretty spectacular here in the Silver State due to an amazingly low level of light pollution. Night skies as pure as ours is a pretty rare occurrence throughout the country so we count ourselves lucky to have them here.

  1. Unique and otherworldly state parks.

Mike Boening Photography/Flickr Our state parks are some of the oldest and most unique in the country. Parks like Valley of Fire and Cathedral Gorge boast some of the most breathtaking landscapes you’ve ever seen. The best part? Non-Nevadans seem to have no clue that they exist.

  1. Extraterrestrial attractions.

Miss Shari/Flickr Where else will you find attractions like the Extraterrestrial Highway? Or an alien-themed motel? Here in Nevada, we have a slight obsession with aliens, but that’s what makes living here so special.

  1. Mountains everywhere.

Don Graham/Flickr There seems to be a misconception that Nevada is home to nothing but vast areas of flat desert. That couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, the Silver State is home to more mountain ranges than any other state in the continental U.S. More than 300 mountain ranges can be found within our breathtaking landscapes, with at least 40 peaks exceeding 10,000 feet in elevation.

  1. The best food scenes.

Kingfox/Flickr From the constantly evolving food scene of Las Vegas to the more down-home style of restaurants found in our smaller towns, Nevada is home to some seriously delicious eats. Whether you’re into gourmet or delightfully homemade, our state truly has it all when it comes to food!

  1. So. Much. Weird. Stuff.

Thomas/Flickr It’s no secret that Nevada is home to some strange attractions. Seven Magic Mountains. The Neon Museum. The International Car Forest. The list could go on and on of uniquely Nevadan oddities. Again, these quirks are what make living in Nevada such a special experience.

  1. Largest alpine lake in North America.

Don Graham/Flickr Okay, okay. Technically we share this one with another state. However, this list just wouldn’t be complete without the addition of our beautiful and wonderous Lake Tahoe. After all, it’s considered the largest alpine lake in North America and it’s by far one of the most majestic bodies of water you’ll ever see.
