Despite being one of the last states to enter the Union, a lot has happened in Texas over the past 173 years. Let’s take a moment to celebrate our homeland and remember some of the most noteworthy historic events, attractions, and accomplishments of the Lone Star State.

  1. Watching the Houston Oilers play in the Astrodome

Flickr/uffdah777 Texas kids today will never understand the exhilarating experience that was a night out at the Eighth Wonder of the World. Both the team and the dome are long gone, but they’ll go down in history forever.

  1. The Enron scandal

Flickr/thomashawk Before its name was changed to Minute Maid Park, the field where we all gather to watch the Astros play was called Enron Field. Just a month after 9/11 shook the nation, over 4,000 people lost everything they had when Enron stock plummeted. A sad time for Texas, that’s for sure.

  1. Shopping at Foley’s…

Flickr/uhdigital Okay, technically we still get to do that since it’s been replaced by Macy’s, but we can all agree that it just isn’t the same.

  1. …and Joske’s

Wikipedia The same principle applies here, but the nostalgia that came along with seeing these department store windows filled with Christmas trees and fake snow during wintertime was lost forever when Dillard’s was born.

  1. Hurricane Rita…

Flickr/micaht2000 We Southeast Texans will never forget panicking at the sight of this massive storm that spanned almost the entire Gulf of Mexico. The incredible wind damage from the Category 5 behemoth affected residents for months (and even years for some) after landfall.

  1. …and Hurricane Ike

Flickr/gisuser Just three years after Rita, when some people were still recovering from the damage they accrued, another storm slammed the Gulf Coast. This one was less of a wind monster and more of a rainmaker, but it was still more than we needed to deal with so soon after a previous hurricane.

  1. “Houston, the Eagle has landed.”

Flickr/galaxyfm Those who were alive in 1969 will always remember July 20, 1969 - the day when one small step was taken by man while one giant leap was made for mankind.

  1. Riding the day away at Astroworld

Flickr/mario Sure, there are other amusement parks…but none will ever awaken the child inside us quite like Astroworld did.

  1. The election of George H. W. Bush

Wikipedia No matter your political views, watching a Houstonian get elected to office in 1988 (as well as his son in 2000) was pretty neat.

  1. Snow on Christmas Eve in 2009

Flickr/larkspur Getting enough snow for it to actually stick is a rarity here in the Lone Star State, so the fact it happened on Christmas Eve was basically a miracle!

What are some other moments every Texan will always remember? Let us know!
