Living in Louisiana can be a pretty unique experience. From the food to the culture, there’s something just so special about growing up in this beautiful state. After a while, you start to learn the little things that have become unspoken rules for most Louisianians. Here are some of our favorites:
- Always have certain spices on hand.
Kate Ter Haar/Flickr Whether that’s Tabasco, Zatarain’s, Slap Ya Mama’s, or any other Cajun season blend, your cabinet should always be stocked with one (or all) of them.
- Never forget your umbrella.
Morgan Schmorgan/Flickr It’s probably a good idea to have multiple umbrellas so you can keep one at work, one in the car, and one at home because here in Louisiana, it can be sunny one moment and a downpour the next.
- Host a crawfish boil the day before trash pick-up.

- Mondays are for red beans & rice.
cookbookman17/Flickr Which means Sundays are for soaking the beans.
- Holding the door open for strangers is automatic.
OuadiO/Flickr We’re just naturally polite!
- Po’boys are best judged by how many napkins you use.
Buck82/Flickr The more napkins, the better!
- When a funeral procession is passing through, pull over to the side of the road.
Matthew Warner/Flickr This one should be obvious and done out of respect for the deceased, but the courtesy isn’t always seen in other states.
- Mardi Gras cups are the most coveted throw.
Coffeespiral/Flickr You’ve got to stock up for your house!
- Directions are given using time and landmarks rather than distance.
Thomas Hawk/Flickr You know, just head towards the bayou about 10 minutes then hang a left once you pass the grocery store.
- Tea is always sweet.
Personal Creations And iced.
- Flip-flops are year-round footwear.
Mark Bonica/Flickr There are days in December and January where you can easily throw on the flip-flops and head out the door (just don’t forget your umbrella!)
