Louisiana is filled with beautiful natural wonders just waiting to be explored. Before the year ends, be sure to take some time to discover some of these natural attractions. In no particular order, here are some of our favorites:
- Driskill Mountain
Wikimedia That’s right, Louisiana does have a mountain or two! Tiny but mighty, Driskill Mountain stands at 535 feet and is the tallest natural summit in Louisiana. You can hike up the mountain for a fun afternoon adventure, which won’t take too long at all. To learn more, check out our previous article here.
- Barataria Preserve
Coffeespiral/Flickr The 23,000 acres over at Barataria Preserve in Marrero include bayous, swamps, marshes, and forests. The boardwalk trails allow visitors a glimpse into Louisiana’s wetlands that haven’t been disturbed by man, and it’s truly incredible. To learn more, check out our previous article here.
- Grand Isle

Louisiana’s only inhabited barrier island is perfect for birdwatchers, fishermen, and those just looking to sink their toes in the sand. You can even bring a tent and camp right on the beach! - Atchafalaya River Basin
Tobin/Flickr The Atchafalaya River Basin is the largest river swamp in the country, measuring in at approximately 1.4 million acres. - Kisatchie National Forest
Justin Meissen/Flickr Louisiana’s only national forest spans an impressive 600,00 acres over five ranger districts and is perfect for the adventurous nature lover. - Lake Martin

The lake is part of the Cypress Island Nature Preserve and is home to scores of wildlife, including gators, snakes, birds, and more.
