There’s just something so entrancing about exploring a trail with no one else around. It’s just you and nature, one on one. Well, unless you bring a four-legged friend along! These secret trails aren’t abandoned or dangerous, but you won’t usually find anyone else visiting at the same time. Who is ready to get out there and explore?
- Dad Perry Park - Lawrence
Kim Luce/AllTrails This 1-mile loop is a little trail that features wildflowers while they’re in season, and overgrown places where people haven’t been wearing down the path. Just how we like it!
- Southwind Rail Trail - Iola
Clark Coan/AllTrails This longer trail is 13.7 miles, and is an “out-and-back” meaning you’ll reach a point before turning around and heading back the way you came. It’s a fun little trail that I’ve never encountered anyone on, letting me enjoy nature to its fullest.
- Crooked Knee Horse Trail - Olivet
Annelise Adams/AllTrails This horse trail is a 10 mile loop that’s perfect for those Kansans who love a bit of horseback riding through our scenery. It’s best (and probably safest) to use it between March and October. It’ll cost a couple bucks to get in, but that just means there are less people here at the same time as you.
- Blue Camp Trail - Marysville
Linda Crandall/AllTrails This little loop is only 2.4 miles long, and is the perfect balance between a used trail and an abandoned one. You can use this trail for hiking, biking, or horseback riding, which means there’s multiple ways to enjoy it, no matter how many times you visit. However, when it’s horseback season, you might find that locals do use this trail semi often. On the right day, however, it’s empty!
- Banner Creek Reservoir - Holton
Cindy Stavropoulos/AllTrails This 2 mile loop is the perfect length for a day’s adventure, but not so long you hate walking by the end of it. You can also take a different option and hike the full 15 miles around the lake, if you wanted the extra challenge. It’s the choose-your-adventure of Kansas hiking trails.
- Casner Creek Trail - Fall River
Granger Meador/AllTrails Casner Creek was empty when I last came through, and it didn’t look like it gets a lot of visitors. This 1.5 mile loop is a great place for a quick hike, and an excuse to explore the nearby lake and Fall River, Kansas.
- Blustem Spur and Rolling Hills Trail - Buhler
Robert Badgett/AllTrails The rolling hills are by far one of Kansas’ most beautiful areas, full of wildflowers and plenty of open skies. This 3.5 mile loop is a great way to explore it, especially if you’ve never been through the area before. The only thing marking the trail is the mowed path, meaning everything else out here is
If you’re just in love with our natural beauty and want to see more of it all the time, check out these areas of Kansas where you’ll get the perfect views of our amazing skies.
