There’s no denying it: it’s pretty easy to spot a Buffalonian from a mile away – and that’s not a bad thing! There’s something about growing here in the Queen City that makes us special and unique characters. If you’ve always called this city home (or even if you’ve lived here for a while), there’s a good chance that when you venture outside of our area, you get a few head-turning reactions when you do things that are simply part of your everyday norm. Wondering what often makes us stand out like a sore thumb? Here are eight quirks that Buffalonians share that may get some strange looks:
- Asking for specific drinks (like Loganberry) and expecting others to understand what on Earth you’re talking about.
Crystal Beach Loganberry/Facebook Unless you had the pleasure of growing up in Buffalo during the golden age of Crystal Beach, you may have no idea what we’re talking about when we ask if you have any Loganberry to drink. This unique, fruity beverage is one that has a special place in our hearts.
- Speaking of beverages, you might get a few side-eyes when you ask for “pop” instead of “soda.”

- Showing up for the holidays with a Malczewski’s butter lamb.
Malczewski’s Butter Lambs/Facebook Again, if you aren’t from Western New York, gestures like this may seem downright strange. As most Buffalonians know, there’s no greater way to enjoy a holiday meal than by sharing it with family and friends, and, of course, a Malczewski’s butter lamb on the table.
- Tailgating to the absolute fullest.
Alan Kotok/Flickr Other Americans may think that they’ve experienced tailgating, but unless you’ve gone tailgating with Buffalo Bills fans in the Queen City, you really haven’t tailgated at all.
- Playing inside, around, and on top of on grain elevators.
Buffalo RiverWorks/Facebook Oh, you don’t make man-made playlands out of the old grain elevators in your city? Well, you’re missing out! Here in Buffalo, we make use of the materials we have at hand and never miss out on having any fun. RiverWorks is one of our favorite spots to hang out!
- Going for a ride on an ice bike.
Canalside/TripAdvisor We certainly know how to have fun here in Buffalo! Some of us actually own or rent ice bikes that we take out onto the ice and, yes, go biking even during the winter! It may look a little strange to out-of-towners, but in Buffalo, going for a nice ice bike ride is just another day for us.
- Keeping your car stocked with winter supplies… all year long.
freestocks.org/Flickr You don’t have to live in Buffalo for long before you realize that winter weather isn’t confined to a few frigid months like it is in other parts of the country. Whether it’s late fall or early spring, you grow to expect weird weather all year long… and properly prepare for it.
- Assuming that all waterfalls are made out of fire and ice.
muntasir mamun Piash/Google You may not be able to find any grand waterfalls actually within Buffalo city limits, but there are magnificent, jaw-dropping waterfalls all around us that give us high expectations when it comes to natural wonders. From the powerful flow of Niagara Falls to the epic Eternal Flame Falls, it’s not hard to see why we expect so much.
