We Kansans eat some odd things sometimes. Whether that’s a food you love to indulge in anywhere or whether you only see it at family reunions, these weird foods that Kansans love are sometimes great and sometimes… not so much. Let’s see what weird things Kansans eat all the time with no problem. Well, some of us, anyway. Have you eaten these weird foods beloved by weird Kansans?
- Ranch on pizza.
bankbryan/Flickr I don’t do this myself, but I know more than a handful of Kansas natives that seem to think this combination is the best.
- Mashed potatoes with our chicken and noodles.
boxer_bob/Flickr Kansans sure love their comfort food, so when someone says “chicken and noodles” we assume it’s being served over (or at least beside) mashed potatoes.
3, Lutefisk.
Chris Malec/Flickr Not all Kansans even know what this is, but this translucent fish is popular in a few communities where the taste is something they’re accustomed to.
- Tomato-only sandwiches.
Dennis/Flickr Whether you’re a mayo or miracle whip person, there’s nothing more refreshing than a garden fresh tomato between two slices of white bread.
- Loose meat sandwiches.
Jimmy Emerson, DVM/Flickr Now we’ve all heard of Nu-Way, but did you know it all started in Wichita? Classic loose meat sandwiches are a Kansas tradition through the years.
- The “anything” casserole.
Joe/Flickr It doesn’t matter if it’s leftovers, tuna, or cheeseburger, Kansans will make it a casserole.
- Jell-O with… carrots?
rochelle hartman/Flickr This is something you never make yourself, but a relative or church member always brings it to potlucks. Surprisingly, it’s well-loved by many, whether you pick lime or orange gelatin to put your carrots in.
- Pickle Pops.
Steve Terrell/Flickr One of those state fair treats that went wild, pickle popsicles are something only a Kansas would love.
- Cottage cheese with toppings.
wintersoul1/Flickr For some reason, everyone I know who likes cottage cheese can’t agree about their favorite topping. Some people like tomatoes, and others like pineapple or mandarin oranges.
Speaking of Kansans, there’s nothing we love more than a town full of history and places to visit. Check out this charming town in Kansas that can’t be beat.
