Tucked away in Radford, Virginia, St. Alban’s Sanatorium is a historic asylum that dates back to the 1900s. It also just so happens to be among the most haunted places in the state. If the idea of a paranormal experience sounds thrilling, you can even sign up for a ghost hunt in this former psychiatric hospital. Be warned, though – it’s not for the faint of heart!

The school hoped to instill virtues of young Southern gentleman, yet bullying became a prolific issue and it wasn’t long before instances of suicides happened on campus.

Enrollment plummeted and by 1916, Dr. John C. King reopened St. Alban’s as a sanatorium for the mentally ill and distressed.

While the facility was created in hopes of being the best of its kind in the nation, procedures were significantly lacking and patients endured much more harm than good.

These treatment experiments often included shock therapy and lobotomies. And with a doctor-patient ratio of 48 to 6509, conditions were truly bleak.
