Wyomingites joke about our seasons. We’ve got July, August, and Winter. It’s always windy, and sometimes when you’re lucky, it’s windy AND cold. But we still stay out here, because we love the scenery, the peacefulness, and the isolation of living in the middle of nowhere… at least that’s what we tell ourselves. It doesn’t really help when we find out that Albany County officially has the worst weather in America.
Wyoming is certainly a treasure - but there’s a reason it’s the least populated state. The gorgeous landscape and pristine wilderness aren’t the only thing you’ll find in the Equality State.
Flickr / Daniel Hoherd Recently, a group of scientists took a look at data from NOAA and told the world what any Wyomingite could have in a heartbeat: that Albany County as the worst weather in America.
Over the course of a decade, Albany County averaged 133 severe weather events each year.
Flickr / Jimmy Emerson, DVM The next closest on the list was Sedwick County, Kansas - with nearly a third fewer events, at 100. Those were the only counties in the country to top 100 severe weather events annually. Number 3 was Polk County, Iowa, with an average of 90 terrible, rotten, no-good days each year.
Of course, most of the severe weather alerts were High Wind Warnings. That shouldn’t come as any surprise to us!

It seems like it’s mostly the people in Wyoming bothered by the weather, so that’s something, at least.
Flickr / Fernando Garcia Horses are designed for the tundra, so the cold temperatures and wind of Wyoming doesn’t shake them up too much. The rest of our wildlife is adapted to the tough life out here.
Of course, it’s not just wind that Albany County residents have to worry about… it can snow pretty hard here, too.
Flickr / Charles Willgred Albany County averages 4.9 winter storms, .9 blizzards, and .9 heavy snow events, too.
But you know what’s great about Wyomingites? They’re not about to up and leave Laramie just because they found out it’s got the worst weather in America… right?
Flickr / Daniel Hoherd Winter wouldn’t be any fun if we weren’t worried about being blown off the road into a giant snowbank anyway.
You can find more details on the weather study right here. It’s already snowing off and on throughout the Cowboy State, and personally I can’t wait for winter! I could do without all this wind, though…
