There’s nothing better than enjoying a cup of gelato on a hot summer day. This particular ice cream parlor has been around for over a century, still churning out homemade gelato with the same recipes that made them so popular in the early 1900s. If you’ve never made a trip to Angelo Brocato’s, you’re in for a real treat.

If you’re a true New Orleanian, you’ve probably heard of Angelo Brocato’s Original Ice Cream Parlor.

Joe S./Trip Advisor They’ve been serving up delicious treats for over a century.

Angelo Brocato began learning the art of making ice cream at 12 years old.

Phillip L./Foursquare He did an apprenticeship in one of the most prestigious ice cream parlors in Palermo. He learned everything he could from them and several of his original recipes are still used today.

Brocato opened his first store on Ursulines Street in 1905.

Eduardo D./Foursquare He made all the ice cream by hand, making flavors that New Orleans had never seen before. These original flavors quickly made this ice cream parlor grow in popularity, and he moved to a larger location on Ursulines Street a few years later.

After 80 years in the French Quarter, the Brocatos decided to move the store to its current location on North Carrollton in Mid City.

Judy W./Foursquare They maintained all the charm of the Ursulines Street stores, and it’s that nostalgic charm, combined with amazing desserts, that’s continued to keep them one of the most popular New Orleans traditions.

From cannolis to Italian cookies, you really can’t go wrong with anything you try here.

Katt313/Trip Advisor Their cannolis are handmade and stuffed fresh to order so you can enjoy them when they are perfectly crispy. You can get them in regular or miniature size, and they are filled half-chocolate, half-vanilla and dipped in pistachio nuts and sprinkled with powdered sugar and cinnamon, but you can also order one flavor if you prefer.

Their Spumoni is always a crowd pleaser.

Adam G./Foursquare A perfect wedge of tutti fruity, lemon, and pistachio almond gelato topped with sweet almond whipped cream. Yum!

And of course, you have to try their gelato.

Wikimedia Using the finest ingredients from both here in American and imported from Italy, they make all of their gelato in store. Gelato is different than American ice cream in that gelato is made using a custard-based mixture with less milk fat, and it’s churned at a much slower speed to produce a denser product.

Swing by and pick up some delicious treats next time you’re in the neighborhood.

Joe S./Trip Advisor Their address is 214 Carrollton Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70119.
