Sure, New York’s Niagara Falls is stunning and dramatic – but it’s also crowded with tourists, and a bit of a pain to get to. Here in New Hampshire, we have a waterfall that’s nearly as tall, and it’s nestled in the most stunning location in the woods. Though it doesn’t approach Niagara Falls in terms of its width or the amount of water flowing down it, but it’s just as beautiful and awe-inspiring in its own way. If you haven’t visited Arethusa Falls in Crawford Notch State Park yet, don’t delay – this is one of the most stunning spectacles the Granite State has to offer.
You’ll have to take a bit of a hike to reach Arethusa Falls, but trust us, it’s more than worth the effort.

There are a couple of different trails to choose from, but we recommend getting there via the Bemis Brook Trail, since it takes you past some gorgeous smaller falls on the way – like Bemis Falls, pictured here.

You’ll also pass the lovely Coliseum Falls – stop and take a breather here. Listening to the rushing water and chirping birds is sure to bring you a sense of peace.

Look carefully at the rock formations and you’ll see the perfect pools thousands of years of flowing water have carved in the rock.

Even with all the smaller falls as you hike, trust us, you will know when you’ve reached Arethusa Falls. They’re more dramatic than anything you’ve seen in the Granite State! The full drop is 140’ tall.

The appearance of the falls changes from day to day, season to season, with varying water flow and the changing colors of foliage.

Once you’ve seen the falls in the summer, start making your plans to come back next winter - the frozen falls are a spectacle not to be missed.

Standing under the falls will give you the most marvelous sense of their massive scale.
