We’ve lucked out this year, as the fall foliage in New Mexico is bright and bold as ever. There are dozens of overlooks, forests, and scenic drives to view the leaves changing colors, but this one trail in Santa Fe might top them all. As you’re hiking up to the top of a mountain within one of our most spectacular national forests, you can see a sea of aspen trees all illuminating their golden leaves. If you’re a lover of fall colors, this hike is perfect for you.

The hike isn’t too steep, but you will gradually gain over 2,000 feet in elevation. By the top, you’ll feel this moderately difficult trail. Dogs are welcome, as are horses! If you’ve wanted to do a horseback riding hike, Aspen Vista Trail is a good choice.

Although Aspen Vista Trail is a gorgeous hike to take all year, October is when the aspen trees come to life and illuminate their golden leaves.

Much of the trail is not shaded, so make sure to wear sunscreen. At 11 miles long, you’ll want to pack food and water before embarking on this beautiful fall journey.
