Barboursville Vineywards, established in 1976, was built on the original grounds of Barboursville, one of the most fascinating ruins in the area.

Barboursville was built between 1814 and 1822 for James Barbour, who was at the time the governor of Virginia. Its unique design is attributed to Thomas Jefferson, a friend and political ally of Barbour.

It was Christmas Day in 1884 when an accidental fire burned nearly all of the house down, save the ruins that are still in place today. These hauntingly beautiful structures provide just a glimpse of the home’s former beauty.
