For one of the most unique caving experiences in California, make your way to Black Chasm Cavern in the town of Volcano. Located in the heart of Gold Country, this makes for one incredible adventure that the whole family will love.

The cave offers a 45-minute walking tour of this dazzling cave. You’ll descend approximately 100 feet below the surface to view the three chambers with the most spectacular formations. The tour isn’t super strenuous, but keep in mind you will be traversing a lot of stairs.

The naturally cool cave makes for a heavenly respite on a hot summer day. During the tour you’ll spot some brilliant formations like stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones, and rare helictite crystals.

The cave is especially notable for the massive amount of helictites it contains. These stunning crystal formations seem to defy gravity and sprout from the cave wall in every direction imaginable. It’s believed that only 5% of earth’s caves contain these helictites, and Black Chasm is one of them.

The tour lasts under an hour, but you could spend all day taking advantage of the different activities the cavern offers. Since you’re in Gold Country, you might as well try your hand at panning for gold in some authentic sluice boxes!

Kids will be absolutely delighted to take part in this iconic Gold Rush era activity. Don’t forget to check out the gift shop which is stocked with neat geology related items or enjoy lunch at one of the picnic areas.

They also offer a Labyrinth Tour for children ages 8 and up. This three hours tour takes you through the Zen Garden where several massive rock formations were uncovered by hydraulic mining in the 19th century. Participants are encouraged to climb, slide, and scramble around the rocks!
