Boulder Junction is a small town with fewer than 1,000 people way, way up north. It’s just miles from the Upper Peninsula and it’s tucked in among a ton of small lakes. It’s a true Northwoods town, but sometimes, when you look at the pictures here, it’s easy to imagine you’re somewhere totally different. We don’t have much in the way of elevation or hills here, but with the towering trees and epic forest, along with small, reflective lakes and abundant wildlife, it doesn’t take much to imagine that Boulder Junction is actually somewhere a bit more west.
Boulder Junction is known as the Musky Capital of the of World thanks to all the lakes dotting the landscape. The peaceful, calm escape these lakes offer is a contrast to the trees and hills and add to the illusion that you could be in somewhere like Colorado.

The illusion is especially potent in the winter. The different tree lines help make this area look like it could be on a mountainside.

Without their needles and leaves, the trees look like they stretch to the sky, making you feel like they could go on forever and you could be in the middle of a much bigger forest.

This field of wildflowers looks like it’s on a rolling hill instead of closer to sea level.

When I think about life in the mountains, it’s living outdoors and exploring all the nooks and crannies — and that’s why Boulder Junction fulfills that vision. All the little lakes feel like the surprise crater lakes you find when driving in the Rockies.

One of the best things about being in the Rockies is all the wildlife and Boulder Junction does not disappoint.

..there is a ton of wildlife to see and experience. There are even unique albino deer who seem to flourish in the area.

There’s just something so tranquil and inviting about this part of the state, where you’re far, far away from the stresses of life and that’s part of what lends itself to feeling like you could be in a whole different state.

The small lakes, abundant trees, and different tree lines create the illusion of different elevations and make you feel like the mountains can’t be far off.

They call parts of the west “Big Sky Country” and I think this part of Wisconsin gives it a run for its money.
