Wyoming’s landscape is dotted with remnants of the past. From geologic wonders to unqiue roadside attractions, nearly everything in this state tells a story. One place that’s perfect for catching a glimpse of history is right in the heart of Cheyenne, at the Cheyenne Union Pacific Depot.
In the heart of Cheyenne, the old Union Pacific Depot stands out as a breathtaking landmark.

The Depot is the last of the grand 19th cenutry depots along the Transcontinental Railroad, and was by far the most elegant station built by Union Pacific west of its Council Bluffs Headquarters.

In 1887 the Depot’s construction began. The following year, a dry summer and brutal winter proved costly for the state’s cattle industry, and had the depot been started a year later, it’s unlikely there would have been the funds to build such an impressive structure.

In 1993, the Union Pacific Railroad donated the storied building to the city of Cheyenne, and the city restored the Depot and opened a museum.

The Museum today tells the story of this important station, as well as the significance of the Transcontinental Railroad in opening up the West for exploration, settlement, and commerce.

Outside the Depot and Museum, you’ll find artwork and statues created by famous Wyoming sculptors. The collection of painted cowboy boots along the building are some of Wyoming’s most impressive public art displays.
