Cholla Campground In Arizona S Tonto National Forest Is Too Dreamy To Pass Up

If you love to camp, then you’re certainly in the right place in Arizona! Whether you seek to camp in or atop the Grand Canyon, or prefer bedding down next to one of Arizona’s recreational lakes, camping is an activity that brings the whole family outside and encourages everyone to unplug for some good old-fashioned R&R.

Within the Tonto National Forest, the Forest Service lists 43 campgrounds where you can get away from it all.

But we fell head-over-heels for this lush beauty found at the Cholla Campground alongside Roosevelt Lake.

For one, it dishes up forever views of the Four Peaks Wilderness, Salome Canyon, and the Sierra Ancha mountain range. Imagine waking to this view each morning and getting your campfire started to cut the chill in the air until things warm up a bit.

Cholla Campground’s 206 campsites (some with RV hookups) are available on a first-come, first-served basis. And while not all of them are lakeside, they are all shrouded in lush plantings, giving you some privacy you just don’t find at other campgrounds that don’t have the same kind of vegetation.

You’ll want to be sure to get here early to get the campsite of your dreams. Another fun fact about Cholla Campground is that it’s the largest fully solar-powered campground in the country.

A paved boat launch is nearby so you can get out on the water, if you choose. And the campground has playgrounds for the kiddos.

Cholla Campground and Recreation Site is located at 28079 AZ-188, Roosevelt, AZ 85545. There are 206 camp sites with shade ramadas, fire rings with grills, picnic tables, and water hydrants. Some sites are suitable for RVs and a dump station is available during certain hours on the weekends. No reservations are accepted, and this campground has a self-pay kiosk for check-in.
