There’s certainly no shortage of beautiful lakes here in Northern California. If you love exploring our region’s natural wonders, then chances are you’ve already visited places like Shasta Lake and Lake Tahoe. However, there are plenty of lesser-known lakes tucked away from the public eye. These lakes have plenty to offer and the one featured here could even be considered the clearest lake in Northern California. You’ll be glad you ventured off the beaten path to find this hidden gem. Boasting crystal clear waters, this lake is an actual paradise that you’ll have to see to believe.

Located just a few miles from Highway 395 in Mono County is one of the clearest lakes you’ve ever seen—Convict Lake. Don’t let the name of this idyllic lake unsettle you. Boasting crystal clear waters and jaw-dropping scenery, this place is as close to heaven on earth as you can get.

Convict Lake is considered one of the most easily accessible lakes in the Eastern Sierras. You can drive right up to it and there are parking lots situated on both sides of the lake. You’ll find a trailhead at the parking lot that takes you on a scenic loop around the lake, or you can simply stroll right down to the shores.

The hiking trail circles the lake, providing access to a myriad of beaches along with the Convict Canyon trail that leads you straight into the backcountry of the John Muir Wilderness. We definitely recommend taking your time to explore this stunning region of the Sierras.

However, you’re sure to be frozen with awe as soon as the lake comes into view. The Sierras are chock full of gorgeous lakes, but you’ll be hard-pressed to find one as breathtaking as Convict Lake. The water is so clear that you can actually see the rocks at the bottom!

Boasting an awe-inspiring backdrop of alpine mountains, the scenery is seriously the stuff of dreams. During the summertime, the lake is a hot spot of recreation. The fishing is prime here since the lake contains a healthy population of rainbow and brown trout.

You might be wondering how such a beautiful place got such an odd name. Back in 1871, a posse trapped a group of escaped convicts from Carson City at the lake. A shootout ensued and killed posse member Robert Morrison. After the incident, the peak above the lake was named Mount Morrison and the lake was named Convict.

Despite the slightly unsettling name, Convict Lake is an idyllic destination that is perfect for escaping reality and immersing yourself in the dramatic scenery of the Sierra Nevadas. This is one of those scenes that needs to be witnessed in person, so be sure to plan a visit soon!
