Built in the 1870s at the behest of Carla McCue, the mansion is believed to have been built on an old Indian burial ground. In fact, more than 70 unmarked graves were unearthed at the site.

Others, however, say that the mansion sits upon the site of a former prison, where prisoners were tortured and buried.

During her lifetime, Carla’s “healing powers” drew visitors from all over the U.S. and from as far away as Scotland, all in search of healing from illness, disease, and evil spirits. (Yet, some considered Carla herself an entity of evil.)
