More than 150 years ago, when war tore this region apart, many battles were fought and today, they are remembered and commemorated. The oldest state park in West Virginia is tied to such a battle, and you should definitely pay it a visit.
Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park in Hillsboro commemorates a Civil War battle fought on November 6, 1863. The Union victory caused Confederate activity in west Virginia to permanently collapse.

Today, the battlefield is preserved as a state park. Visitors to the park can learn about the history of the battle and its significance to West Virginia via its museum and outdoor attractions, but that is just part of the experience.

Once you learn the history, be sure to take in the view from Lookout Tower (pictured above). From there, you can follow one the park’s eight hiking trails. With the exception of two, most of the trails are rated as either easy or moderate.

While there, you can also go camping and take a scenic train ride in nearby locations off site. If you are in the mood for visiting a small state park with historical significance, this is the place to go.
