If you, or the kiddos in your life, love a good thrill, then this attraction is one you (and they) are sure to love. Whether or not you have a passion for reptiles, this little-known reptile zoo hiding near one of the most charming beaches in the state is day trip material.
Say hello to the Edisto Island Serpentarium, where you’re always the guest of honor to hundreds and hundreds of hand-caught reptiles.

That’s right, hand-caught reptiles. The two founders of this unique attraction are brothers who spent their youth and adulthood chasing and catching their passion: reptiles. In 1999, they opened the Edisto Island Serpentarium so others could enjoy their collection of, well… it’s easier to show you than to tell, so take a look below:

Firstly, no serpentarium would be complete without the most unwelcomed guests in any neighborhood. You’ll see them in a (safe for you) natural habitat at this unique zoo.

Next, are the snakes. Watch and observe the professionals as they drain venom using their bare hands! (Yikes!)

Many, if not all, of the snakes at the serpentarium were caught by the brothers and the staff.

Habitats for all of the reptiles on display have been carefully constructed to assure the creatures cannot escape.

That being said, here’s a peek at the Venomous Snake Observatory. It is much deeper than is shown in the photo, and don’t worry… they can’t escape.

The reptile zoo does a great job with creating eye-appealing natural habitats that are safe for both the full-time residents — and their guests (you!).

My favorites are probably the turtles.

Again, most of these have been hand-caught by the keepers, many of them rescued from near and far neighborhoods. Still others may have been born here at the zoo.

We are not sure where these little turtles came from. Whether born here, or from a local pond, they sure are darling!
