Fall in Virginia is the season for road trips. Gorgeous fall foliage illuminates our scenic byways and nature calls to us to explore all of her beautiful attractions. There’s one drive in particular that’s especially stunning this season. And it just so happens to pass by what’s been deemed the Grand Canyon Of The South. Need we say more? Breaks Interstate Park is a beloved landmark situated right along the Virginia/Kentucky border. There are several ways to access the park, yet we recommend driving along Route 80.

You’ll pass through historic towns such as Honaker, which is tucked away in the Southern Appalachian Mountains.

Eventually, the road will take you to the main attraction: Breaks Interstate Park. This 4,500-acre park is filled with mountain views and greenwood lands, truly a nature lover’s paradise.

The crown jewel of this corner of the state is the deep 5-mile canyon which is often referred to as the Grand Canyon of the South.

The canyon was formed by the Russell Fork River, shown below. This persistent river carved out a five mile canyon, which is the largest of its kind east of the Mississippi.
