If you ever find yourself driving through Albany, one look at this cluster of run-down, dingy buildings would have you swearing up and down they’d been abandoned since the days of the Old West. A little bit of exploring, however, would reveal a situation that couldn’t be more opposite. Fort Griffin General Merchandise Restaurant is a thriving eatery that’s off the beaten path but absolutely worth a visit, and you’ll undoubtedly agree after taking a look for yourself.
The restaurant was opened in 1981 by two brothers while they were stationed at nearby Dyess Air Force Base. Known collectively as “The Beehive,” these seemingly-defunct buildings are actually a thriving Old West replica sure to take you back in time.

Inside, you’ll find an old-fashioned, rustic vibe unique to saloons. Western decor lines the walls, a bartender slides sarsaparillas to thirsty patrons, and families dressed in plaid, blue jeans, and cowboy boots chow down on some good Southern eats.

Lamb chops are one of the Beehive’s signature dishes. Served over mashed potatoes and with a side of grilled zucchini, it’s a perfectly balanced meal that’s full of flavor.
