Follow the rules. Grumpy? Leave the grumpiness outside. Sitting on the grey stool? Better alert the staff when the fire gets too low. Have a dish suggestion for the menu? Get ready to work, starting really early in the morning. But, before you can follow all the rules, you’ve got to snag a key to the best little diner in Pennsylvania. And once you’ve got that key, you’re certainly not going to want to let it go.

Sure, you can find the address to Fred’s Breakfast Club of New Hope. But, the popular eatery doesn’t make it any easier than that - there’s no sign on the building or on the front door.

But you’ll need a key to get in. That’s right - the door is always locked, although you can use a key to get in each day from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. (Fred’s now serves lunch, too.)

But first you need to snag a key. Know a member? Ask them to sponsor your membership to the diner, which costs $20. (Keep hold of your key, too, because if you lose it, you’ll have to pay $10 to replace it.)

Or if you see someone coming out, at least according to guests who have eaten at this eclectic diner, ask them to keep the door open so you can go in. (If you do it this way, immediately sign your name on the waiting list for membership.)

Now that you’ve made it into the diner that only has counter seating - and just about 33 seats, at that - browse the menu.

Choose from such scrumptious dishes as breakfast sandwiches, buttermilk pancakes, chocolate chip pancakes, and omelets.

Up for a hearty meal? Then, opt for the southern-style sausage gravy and biscuits or the cream chipped beef over toast with a side of home fries.

And, don’t forget to order something to wash it all down with. Freshly squeezed OJ and lemonade, hot chocolate, and coffee are among your choices.
