General Burnside Island State Park is the only of its kind in Kentucky and it has many features that you’re sure to enjoy.
The land that is home to General Burnside Island State Park has a fascinating history. It was originally named Point Isabel when it was settled around 1800 and gained its new name from General Ambrose E. Burnside, a commander for the Union army during the Civil War. Although General Burnside’s career had its ups and downs, the city, and eventually the park, were both named for him.

Of course, the landscape of the Burnside area changed dramatically in the 1950s when Wolf Creek Dam was built and Cumberland Lake was formed. Thanks to this development, an island was created right in the middle of the lake. The land became a state park in 1958 and a causeway was built to reach the island. Today you’ll find an award-winning golf course, campground, and plenty of natural beauty on this unique island state park.

Very near the park is the Lake Cumberland State Dock, where you can find just about any type of water activity imaginable. General Burnside is a nice, quiet place to camp and play golf while still being close to the action on the lake. You can also access the water from the six-lane launch ramp.

The 18-hole island golf course may just be the most popular feature of this scenic park. The course has been completely renovated and was named the best in the state and has accumulated many awards.

The campground is also popular and is open from April 1st through October 31st. The cool lake breezes and stunning views make this one of the most picturesque places to camp in the area.

There are 94 sites with utility hookups at the campground, as well as two central service buildings with showers, restrooms, and a dump station. You’ll also find picnic areas and a playground to enjoy the surroundings.
