There’s no doubt about it: the Hawaiian Islands is easily one of the greatest hiking destinations in the country — and maybe even the world. With miles and miles of trails that ascend mountains, traverse ridgelines, and lead to breathtaking natural beauty, Hawaii is truly a hiker’s paradise. And while we love the islands’ most popular trails as much as the next person, sometimes you need to get away from it all and take the trail less traveled. If you love getting off the beaten path, this forest trail is for you.

A remote enclave tucked away on Oahu’s famous north shore, the Kaunala Loop Trail leads hikers on a magnificent trail through a lush, forested area to a pretty impressive view.

Weaving through four gulches and three forest zones home to both introduced and native trees near the 1,129-acre Pupukea-Paumalu Forest Reserve, the Kaunala Trail is as underrated as it is off the beaten path.

Offering striking views of Oahu’s north shore and the Waianae Mountain Range from approximately 900 feet above sea level, time stands still at the summit of the Kaunala Trail.

Featuring a combination of switchbacks, dirt paths, muddy stream crossings, and even some asphalt, the terrain on Kaunala Trail will mean you never get too bored.

While many other Hawaii hikes offer little to no shade or breeze, Kaunala meanders through a shady forest and is known to be quite breezy, making it the perfect trail to tackle on a warm weekend day.

A combination of valley, ridge, and forest, Kaunala is often overlooked by Oahu locals, but if you’re looking for a secluded adventure far away from the hustle and bustle of Honolulu, this humble hike is perfect. After all, if you truly love hiking in Hawaii, you’ll want to cross as many trails off your bucket list as possible.
