Memorial Day weekend is almost upon us, which will give most working Montanans a nice, long weekend. And since some of our cities and attractions are best enjoyed over a three day period (or longer), we thought we’d highlight some of the Treasure State’s finest spots to see when you’ve got a little extra time.
- Glacier National Park
Jeff Krause / Flickr Obviously, three days is nowhere near enough time to explore Glacier in its entirety (that would take months or possibly years). But it’s definitely enough time to explore a few of its finest spots, like Lake McDonald.
- Fort Benton
Joseph Readdy / Flickr The weather is warming up in the Birthplace of Montana, and a three day weekend gives you plenty of time to stroll along the river, check out all the historic sites, learn the heartwarming story behind the Shep Memorial, and stay at the Grand Union Hotel.
- Bozeman
Visit Bozeman Facebook When was the last time you paid Bozeman a visit? Now only is the downtown area full of shops, bars, eateries and entertainment (both old and new), but the city is close to plenty of hiking trails and natural wonders. Three days gives you the time to explore a little bit of everything.
- Butte
Mattia Panciroli / Flickr Butte is full of local history, and three days is plenty of time to check out the museums, galleries, restaurants and other attractions you’ll find in the city that was once called the Richest Hill on Earth.
- Bigfork
Bigfork Chamber of Commerce Facebook If you want to spend some time at Flathead Lake this summer, consider making Bigfork your base camp. Not only is it close to the water and full of nature-lovers’ attractions, but the downtown area is charming, and The Raven has the best outdoor dining.
- Big Sky
Big Sky Town Center Facebook It’s easy to fall in love with Big Sky. Between the amenities at Big Sky Town Center (like the stellar Farmers Market) and all the nearby opportunities to play in nature, your three day weekend will fly by here.
- Glasgow

But we recommend taking that time to explore Glasgow, an old railroad town with a lot to offer. The Fort Peck Dam Interpretive Center and Museum and the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge are both nearby, and you’ll find plenty of things to do in town as well.
- Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park
Troy Smith / Flickr Looking to get away from it all? A trip deep into this cavern will do the trick, followed by a weekend spent camping at this beautiful state park.
- West Yellowstone
Kevin Oliver / Flickr Many people stop here on their way to Yellowstone National Park, but even if you skip the park entirely, you’ll find plenty to do in this tourist-friendly city. The Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center alone is worth the trip.
- Seeley Lake
Tim Gage / Flickr Who wouldn’t want to spend a long weekend by this peaceful, beautiful lake, not to mention enjoy a meal (or three) at Lindey’s Prime Steak House? It’s really no wonder this is a top vacation spot for Montanans.
