There are many local traditions that run deep through Kentucky’s roots and one of them is the making of Moonshine. Whether you enjoy this once forbidden product or not, it remains an interesting part of our state’s history and is now shining in Kentucky’s present. If you’ve ever been curious about Moonshine, how it’s made, and how it tastes, you can now partake in it yourself at Kentucky Mist Distillery. With tasting locations in both Whitesburg and Lexington, it’s the one hidden speakeasy-esque place you’ll want to tour.
The story of Kentucky Mist Distillery goes all the way back to the time of Prohibition when the making of moonshine was illegal, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. It was during this period that Henry Holbrook was making and selling moonshine to support his family until he was eventually arrested in 1930 and sent to prison.

During his time in an Atlanta prison, Holbrook made friends with fellow bootlegger, Al Capone. He also decided that he was not finished leaving his legacy quite yet, and he continued on with moonshine until his death in 1987.

The Holbrook family was not finished with this industry, however, as Henry’s grandson, Colin Fultz, brought moonshine — legally — to the public of eastern Kentucky with Kentucky Mist Distillery.
