Fort Wetherill has a long military history, in its heyday, it was the largest fort of the Coast Defenses of Narragansett Bay. Abandoned after WWII and turned over to the state of Rhode Island, it has been reclaimed by nature in places and taken over by something quite captivating in others.
The abandoned fort sits within Fort Wetherill State Park on the south part of the eastern tip of Conanicut Island in Jamestown. The 61-acre park is known best for its granite cliffs and stunning views.
