Spain believed that their territory stretched over to the Calcasieu River, but the U.S. believed that their territory should extend to the Sabine River.

Until it was sorted out, both sides agreed that they wouldn’t allow settlers or their military into the disputed land. The area became known as the “neutral strip” or “no man’s land.”

After 16 years, the 1819 Adams-Onis Treaty put an end to the land dispute and marked the border at the Sabine River.
