There is obviously quite a bit of fascinating history in and around Cincinnati, much of which we can still experience today. Whether in a museum or by visiting a historical site firsthand, there’s much to learn about our city’s past. If you could travel all the way back to about 2,500 years ago, you would encounter the Adena culture and perhaps even witness them building a massive burial mound. But since time machines have yet to be invented, head to Miamisburg and see the Miamisburg Mound – an enormous and fascinating burial site that’s just a short drive from Cincinnati.
Miamisburg Mound Park is located in Miamisburg, Ohio, about an hour north of Cincinnati. This historical site and family-friendly park is a popular destination for locals and a wonderful location for a day trip from our area.

The burial mound was built by the Adena Native Americans somewhere between 1000 BC and 400 AD. This fascinating hill is the largest conical shaped earthwork of its kind in the United States.

The mound, which was once over 70 feet tall, now measures about 65 feet at its peak, and you can climb to the top via stairs that were added to its side. The burial mound measures 877 feet around and quite a unique sight in this suburban area.

Thousand of years ago, these ancient peoples built this mound over time to bury their dead. In 1869, a portion of it was excavated and a bark-covered skeleton was discovered. Archaeologists also found an empty chamber located 28 feet beneath the mound.

When you visit, be sure to climb to the top and take in the view. There is a small, circular spot on top with a few benches to rest for awhile before making the trek back down.

The views from the summit of the mound are spectacular and give you a rare look at the land that was once occupied by Native Americans and roaming creatures that no longer exist. Today, the view includes the park below, as well as nearby businesses and homes.

While the mound is a designated historical site in Ohio, it is also a public park. There are shelters, picnic tables, and a playground if you wish to stay around a bit longer.
