Formed in 1955, the Astronomical Society of Harrisburg, PA., Inc. purchased the land on which the Edward L. Naylor Astronomical Center sits, in 1967.

Since then, more than 100 amateur astronomers have become members of the society, which depends heavily on membership fees and public donations to keep running.
