Every year in the late summer, the night sky is graced with the spectacular sight of countless “shooting stars.” What we’re really seeing is the Perseids meteor shower, an awe-inspiring celestial event.
Nebraska provides the perfect vantage point from which to view the spectacular shower. Our abundant rural areas provide the freedom from light pollution that’s needed for optimal star gazing.

One of the greatest places to view the celestial phenomenon is Nebraska’s vast, sparsely populated Sandhills region. This year, the annual Nebraska Star Party is happening August 5-10, ending just before the peak of the Perseids shower. This will make it convenient for dedicated star gazers to come for the party and stay for the incredible show.

This year’s Perseids shower will peak on the night of August 12th-13th, though you’ll likely be able to see many meteors in the nights leading up to and following the peak. The waxing crescent moon will set early in the night on the 12th, leaving the sky exceptionally dark and ideal for viewing one of nature’s most beautiful displays. Plan to stay out all night to see as much of the show as possible!

Even if you can’t get out to the Sandhills for the Star Party or the meteor shower, Nebraska is just full of wonderful places to watch the sky. For the best viewing, head to a rural area away from towns, where the sky is likely to be darkest. The fewer artificial lights nearby, the more “shooting stars” you’ll be able to see.
