Utahns love ice cream, but there’s a little frozen custard shop that opened in the early 1980s that draws big crowds in all of its locations. If you grew up in the Bountiful or Salt Lake Area in the 1980s, you have memories of Nielsen’s Frozen Custard. If you haven’t visited lately, it’s time to go back.

The first Nielsen’s Frozen Custard opened inside Cross Roads Mall in Salt Lake City, back in 1981. Soon after, the Nielsen family had custard shops in Bountiful, Salt Lake, and St. George. The Holladay location is at 3918 S. Highland Dr., Holladay, UT 84124.

While the Bountiful location also offers food, the Holladay shop focuses only on custard, and it’s made right there on-site all day long.

Nielsen’s frozen custard is made using patented technology. The liquid custard is poured into the custard machine, which freezes it about 17 seconds. While regular ice cream is made up of 50 percent air, Nielsen’s frozen custard has only 10 percent air, so it’s thick and creamy.

The main difference between frozen custard and ice cream is that custard includes eggs. You might be happy to hear that the rich, creamy frozen custard is lower in fat and calories than ice cream.

The Concrete is like a thick shake. You can get it with more than three dozen different kinds of add-ins, from fresh fruit to nuts to candy.
