Many of us have taken the scenic cliff walk, visited the mansions, and enjoyed the beaches in Newport. But if you are looking for something a little offbeat to do while in this coastal Rhode Island city, take a short hike to Purgatory Chasm in neighboring Middletown.

The natural wonder lies on the shores of Middletown, just a short drive from Newport. Take a brief 100 yard walk to reach this incredible sight.

Walk out onto the cliff top, but watch your step, it’s very rocky here.

Glaciers formed Purgatory Chasm thousands of years ago and seawater has been eroding the fissure ever since.

The chasm is 120 feet long, 10 feet wide at the top, and over 150 feet deep.

You can look directly down into the chasm from a small pedestrian bridge nearby.

The chasm has been expanding as each year passes. Many, many years ago people used to jump across it, now it’s no longer possible.

From the top of the cliffs, you’ll be treated to expansive views of Second Beach. Watch the surfers bobbing up and down in the water.
