Hungry Mother State Park was established in the 1930s as one of Virginia’s very first state parks. The park was built by the CCC using land donated by local landowners along Hungry Mother Creek. Today, we recognize the park for its breathtaking wooded trails and impressive lake. The following photos, courtesy of Virginia State Parks, offer a fascinating insight into the park’s earliest days.

The park was nearly completed in 1936, thanks to the donated land and tireless efforts of the Civilian Conservation Corps.

Between 1933 and 1941, 600 mean from the CCC built roads, trails, a restaurant, bathhouse, and picnic area. During the park’s opening ceremony, there were 6,000 people present!
