When people think of West Virginia’s beauty, the first thing that comes to mind are the mountains and rolling hills of lush forest. But the lakes of the Mountain State are quite beautiful as well – and the clear, blue waters of Stonewall Jackson Lake are sure to take your breath away.

At the center of Stonewall Resort State Park is Stonewall Jackson Lake - a gorgeous body of clear water that you can spend an entire day enjoying.

The park and lake is one of the newer state parks in West Virginia.

Stonewall Resort It was a project completed in 1990 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The property was purchased to construct a flood control dam. The park and lake are named after Confederate General Stonewall Jackson, who played a key role in the successful engagement of many battles during the Civil War.

The marina at the lake is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. all summer long. From there, you can choose to rent any number of vehicles to navigate the 2,600-acre lake.

Stonewall Resort You have several options, depending on the type of lake activity you are planning. You can rent pontoon boats, either a regular one or a double decker, and you can also pay for a guided fishing trip. Though they are not yet available, houseboat rentals will be available for rent soon. The lake is also a known spot for catching muskellunge, crappie and bass.

You can also rent a Craigcat, which is basically a compact powerboat that is a great alternative to jet skis. They are easy to maneuver and offer a thrilling ride on the water. They are even great for fishing.

For a more relaxed experience, you can also rent a paddleboat. It offers a bit more of a casual experience and is a good alternative to the more expensive motorized options.

Aside from the lake itself, there are several other things to do at the resort.

Stonewall Resort State Park The lake is surrounded by 13 miles of hiking trails and a walking bridge that passes over the lake itself. There are a total of 6 trails around the lake, all with the opportunity to view the local wildlife, including deer, turkey, box turtles, squirrels and chipmunks. Some of the more remote spots along the trail system are great for viewing raptors and other birds of prey.

Other activities at the lake include biking, indoor rock climbing and golf.

Anything you could possibly want to do at this lake is available. All you need is a few days without obligations, a desire for exploration and an appreciation for the beauty of nature.
