While flying is most certainly the easiest and most direct way to get from here to there, nothing quite beats the experience of the classic American road trip. If you’ve got time and a dependable vehicle, there’s really nothing stopping you from experiencing the landscape up close and personal. There are seemingly endless routes you can take to enjoy U.S. scenery, but perhaps none of them are as iconic as Route 66. Start in Chicago and take this famed route all the way to California.

Fondly known as the Main Street of America, the historic Route 66 was established in November of 1926 as one of America’s early highway systems.

The original installment of the highway ran from Chicago to Santa Monica, California. Those looking for the classic American road trip can still embark on this famed highway.

In addition to showcasing rugged and beautiful scenery, the highway is equally famous for its small towns and unique attractions along the way. These towns have historically depended on traffic from Route 66 to support their local economies.

If you plan on taking this route, be sure to allow plenty of time for the roadside attractions, Mom & Pop accommodations, and classic American eateries along the way.
