There’s just something so beautiful about trains. Romanticism, nostalgia, and history all combine for an experience guaranteed to leave you longing for the good old days. The Texas State Railroad is certainly no exception – running directly through the breathtaking Piney Woods of the East, there’s no better way to enjoy our state’s great outdoors.
Trains depart from the Palestine Depot through July and Rusk beginning in August. This summer is full of themed rides that promise to be fun for the whole family, so don’t miss out!

Old-fashioned steam engines are coming out to play this season! These rare, Golden Age locomotives are the stars of the show every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday for the next few months.

The vintage Texas & Pacific car will also be on-site for you to marvel at. It’s an endangered species of sorts and served as a prototype for all steam engines built after it.

Another excursion you can participate in this season is a ride-along with the engineer and conductor. Dressed in official safety gear and seated in either a diesel or steam engine, you’ll help prepare for departure and enjoy the beautiful scenery of East Texas from the driver’s seat.

Upon returning to the depot, you’ll receive a photograph of you and the crew as well as a certificate signed by the General Manager. What a way to commemorate such an unforgettable experience!

There’s no feeling quite like riding the rails through the Piney Woods, with forest creatures, over 100 species of bird, and 24 bridges spanning creeks and the Neches River. It’s a timeless adventure sure to leave you feeling relaxed and nostalgic.
