There’s nothing like a relaxing drive down one of Montana’s scenic highways to remind us of just how lucky we are to live here. And as much as we’d like to see them all, most of us won’t be able to dedicate that much time to driving. But if you’re able to check out these 5 scenic byways, you’ll be off to a fantastic start.
- Beartooth Highway
Gerard Stolk / Flickr Considering this is one of the most spectacular highways in the country, it’s something every Montanan should experience. Between the panoramic views and wildlife watching, you’ll want to take plenty of time to explore it.
- Lake Koocanusa Scenic Byway
Tony Webster / Flickr Located in the Kootenai National Forest, Lake Koocanusa Scenic Byway was created in 1992. The 67-mile route connects Libby and Eureka, and the drive is absolutely gorgeous.
- National Bison Scenic Byway
USFWS Mountain-Prairie / Flickr Whether you take the the 19-mile long Red Sleep Mountain Road or Prairie Drive, the National Bison Scenic Byway has a lot to offer in terms of rugged scenery (and wildlife, of course). But if you take Red Sheep Mountain Road, proceed with caution – the inclines are so steep that trailers are banned.
- Big Sky Backcountry Byway
Kurt Haubrich / Flickr This is such a perfect way to see Montana’s plains. The drive takes you through a section of the historic Regina-Yellowstone (R-Y) Trail, passing through the badlands of Terry. The route is on state highways 253, 200 and 13.
- Going-to-the-Sun Road
m01229 / Flickr No list like this is complete without Glacier National Park’s famous Going-to-the-Sun Road. This route is so unbelievably gorgeous, many recommend taking a red bus tour instead of driving so you don’t miss a thing.
