In 1831, a man named John Jacob Houseman purchased buildings on Indian Key and began crafting an area fit with a few homes, a hotel, store and even a post office.

However, in 1840, an Indian raid engulfed the tiny town, leaving behind ruins that still can be visited to this day.

All the buildings and homes were destroyed in the attack, and the majority of the residents fled to new grounds.

The physical address for Indian Key State Historic Site is Offshore Island, Islamorada, FL 33036. Since it is only accessible by boat, tourists will need to either provide their own transportation or rent kayaks nearby. The park is open from 8:00 a.m. until sundown every day of the year.
