One of the most iconic scenes in Vermont is that of Lake Willoughby. With mountains flanking either side of a deep blue lake, it’s certainly a magnificent scene. Not to mention the views from one of the many hiking trails above! It simply has that “wow” factor. Did you know that there is also a beach at Lake Willoughby for us all to enjoy? Actually, there are two beaches… But we’ll get into that later!
Lake Willoughby is located in the town of Westmore, and even the ride there is stunning.

The lake was formed about 12,000 years ago when glacial rivers of ice carved out the valley and formed the dramatic cliffs.

Since this is in one of Vermont’s most remote areas, you’ll find that there isn’t the overcrowding you find at some of the other beaches in the Green Mountain State.

But there are certainly times when more than a few people come to enjoy this stellar spot.

Whether you enjoy the beach from the sand or from a boat, you’ll never find a place quite like this one.

On the north shore you’ll find a public beach that is a great place for families.

The water is known for being crystal clear, but be warned that it’s also known for being very cold.
Tripadvisor/kjCross But the scenery makes it totally worth the chill!
At the southern end of the lake, surrounded by the Willoughby State Forest, there is another public beach tucked away.
Flickr/Kim Woodbridge This beach on the South Bay is clothing optional. So if you’re taking the little ones or if it’s simply not your cup of tea, we recommend staying at the larger beach to the north.
There are miles and miles of hiking trails around the lake, too.

Like most places in Vermont, Lake Willoughby has its share of legends.
Tripadvisor/Willem K One story goes that Lake Willoughby and Crystal Lake are linked by an underground river. It’s said that many years ago a group of horses that fell through the ice on Lake Willoughby, but later their harnesses were found in Crystal Lake.
While it’s impossible to know the truth, or even verify the tale, it’s fun to think that these two lakes are somehow connected!
