There are any number of unusual, fun and downright weird places to visit in the Dells, but one of the coolest is hiding in a building that has more than 160 years of history. Located right on Wisconsin Dells Parkway, The Wisconsin Dells Brat House is serving up some of the very best food in the state all in a converted church that’s full of interesting and historical details.

This fascinating spot was built in 1850 and originally served as a one-room Baptist Boys School. During the Civil War, it became a Methodist Church.

In 1894, the building was expanded and that’s when the stained glass windows that adorn the place now were installed. The GAR was the Civil War version of what we now call the VFW and this building served as their meeting hall.

The building was renovated again in the 1950s, adding the kitchen and in the 1970s, a new church was built, so the Methodists moved out of the building. It served as an antique mall before the current owners opened up the Brat House.

The restaurant highlights much of the gorgeous historical beauty that defines this building while serving up a German-inspired menu that harkens back to our state’s roots.

Whether you’re there for a simple brat or burger while watching the game or you’re craving schnitzel, sauerkraut and spaetzle, the Brat House has you covered.

In summer, the outdoor patio is a great place to relax and unwind and take in the hustle and bustle of the Dells.

And while all the history and the location are the draw, what will keep you coming back over and over again is the food.

This is no simple bar food. The burgers and brats are better than any you’ve ever had, elevated with amazing toppings and sides.

There are many choices in the Dells, but once you’ve had a hearty, filling and oh-so-delicious meal at the Brat House, it’ll become your favorite vacation destination.
