However, the river’s importance has long been obvious to geologists - and that’s because the strata* along the river are rich with fossils.

In fact, according to Mark Puckett, a geology professor at USM, many species of fossils from the river were the first of their kind to be studied. He also noted, “People have collected fossils in the river for decades.”

The strata also hold clues about ancient changes in sea level.

According to Puckett, the shape of the river and its banks are “directly related to the changes in sea level that happened millions of years ago.”

For example, portions of the river feature steep banks and waterfalls – both indicators that the sea level was once pretty high.
