The word ‘desolate’ definitely describes much of the Beehive State. Travel out the the West Desert, or stand at an overlook at Canyonlands National Park, and you’ll see vast expanses of sagebrush-covered land without cities or towns, on the windswept landscape. The destination of this hiking trail may include the word ‘desolate,’ but it’s a far cry from the desolate desert – it’s the exact opposite, in fact. Take a look:
The trail to Desolation Lake starts at the Mill D North Trailhead, which you’ll find about 9.6 miles up Big Cottonwood Canyon.

With elevation changes of 1,988 feet, the hike is considered moderately difficult. It’s just over 7.5 miles, round trip, so allow plenty of time to enjoy this trail.
