Magical light shows are about to take over the night in the Texas Hill Country this summer. Beginning in mid-May and continuing throughout the season, swarms of synchronous fireflies will descend upon the darkest, most remote places in Central Texas — and the spectacular light show is one you won’t want to miss.
There are 36 species of firefly in Texas alone, and they all come out in the summer. You’ll have ample opportunity to see these luminescent, magnificent creatures if you know where to find them.

Given the immense amount of rain our state received last year from Harvey, this season is predicted to be one of the most active in a long time for fireflies. By far the best places for viewing are remote state parks like Colorado Bend and Pedernales Falls.
