Not everything in Alaska comes easily. In fact, we often have to work harder for the things we want or need than those in the lower 48. We don’t just hop in our cars to take a cross-state journey, for instance. We also don’t just casually stroll up hiking trails to witness sweeping vistas; many of our trails require some real effort to climb. Here’s one such trail, but we promise that your effort will be well worth it.

The Flattop Mountain trail in Chugach State Park is strenuous, but it’s also one of the most-hiked mountain peaks in the state. It starts at the Glen Alps Trailhead, which you’ll find about 20 minutes from Anchorage.

…but you’ll soon reach a set of stairs carved into the mountainside with railroad ties, and this is where the real work begins.

It’s only 1.5 miles to the top, but you’ll climb 1,427 feet in that distance, which is why this trail is rated as strenuous.

You’ll be surrounded by natural beauty, so you can distract yourself from the burning in your thighs by watching for pretty summer blooms along the hillside.

You’ll also likely see tons of wildlife, if you’re paying attention.

The picturesque vista at the top stretches out for miles. You’ll see the trail you just conquered, with hikers looking like little ants far below.
