Colorado is home to an estimated 1,500 ghost towns, only 640 of which still remain somewhat intact. Sadly, most of Colorado’s ghost towns remain abandoned and slowly dilapidating, which makes today’s feature all the more unique, as its story continues to unfold in an unexpected way:

It was 1885 when the town of Dunton first came to life, serving as a new homestead and mining camp for the miners working at the nearby American, Smuggler, and Emma mines.

Consisting of 260 acres, the new town proved to be of value, as the population continued to increase with each passing year.

Sadly, when the nearby mines dried up, so did the town, leaving the area completely deserted until 1918, when a local rancher purchased the property for both his cattle business and visiting tourists.

Fast forward to 1994 when the town was back on the market and purchased by its current owners, who spent the next seven years turning it into the jaw-dropping Dunton Hot Springs!
