If there’s one thing to know about Minnesota, it’s that we Minnesotans are very passionate about water. From our license plates to our state motto, we enjoy boasting about our 10,000 beautiful lakes. But this great state is home to more than just lakes. We have wetlands, rivers, ponds, and more than a few incredible waterfalls. One of our lesser known waterfalls is at a beautiful state park in southern Minnesota that is well worth checking out. Take a look:

Minneopa State Park is Minnesota’s third-oldest park, established in 1905. You’ll find it at 54497 Gadwall Rd, Mankato, MN 56001.

Across the park’s 4,600 acres, there is plenty to do. One of the most popular is a bison viewing drive. It’s one of the best places to see the animal in all of Minnesota.

The smaller waterfall has a 6-foot drop that is easily viewed up close. A small pool at the top of the falls makes it easy to check it out.

The lower falls drops down into a deep sandstone gorge. It’s best viewed from the park’s famous stone bridge. This picturesque feature is well worth a snapshot or two.

The bridge offers incredible views of the high falls from above. The 39-foot drop makes Minneopa Falls one of the tallest waterfalls in southern Minnesota.

Cross the bridge and continue down the pathway. You’ll soon come to a tall set of steps.

Along the way, you’ll pass ancient sandstone cliffs, many of which are carved with the initials of previous visitors.

Soon, you’ll see - and hear - the lower falls in the distance.

But you can get closer. Nooks and crannies near the foot of the waterfall make for fantastic viewing platforms - or photo ops.
