If your idea of a good time involves climbing into a deep cave, you’ve probably checked out Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park. And while that cavern is Montana’s only “tourist cave,” the Treasure State has a few hidden gems that are worth exploring, if you’re experienced enough. One is the longest cave in the state, Tears of the Turtle.

It’s worth noting again that you should ONLY attempt to explore this cave if you’re experienced and have the proper equipment and training. Entering any cave is dangerous and should be done at your own risk.

The Tears of the Turtle Cave is located deep in the heart of the Bob Marshall Wilderness Area.

As far as we know, this is the deepest limestone cave in the United States.

Wikipedia It officially surpassed New Mexico’s Lechuguilla cave in 2014. Kentucky’s Mammoth Cave still holds the title of the world’s longest cave system.

In 2014, a team of nine cavers explored Tears of the Turtle and went down 1629 feet, passing the depth of the Lechuguilla Cave in New Mexico.

Wikipedia Exploring this cave is definitely not for amateurs. It requires caving experience and the proper equipment.

For the lucky few that make it to the bottom, it’s pretty amazing.
